Lyon to Geneva: Train, Bus or Car? Here’s What I’d Choose

lyon to geneva lyon trip pinterest

I first visited Geneva with my school, have fond memories of the beautiful lake, the human-size black and white checker board at Parc des Bastions, and a classic Swiss fondue dinner with a live musician playing an alphorn alpine horn (erm.. yes it was rad).

Summary
  • The train is the simplest option, with a direct arrival at Geneva Cornavin (city center).
  • The car is the fastest option when you want full control over timing and stops.
  • The bus is the cheapest option when you want a budget friendly trip.

Here are the 3 options too get from Lyon to Geneva:

What to know before crossing the Swiss border

You’ll cross an international border when entering Switzerland, so you must carry a valid passport or national ID card. Switzerland is part of Schengen, so non EU travelers need a valid Schengen visa to enter.

Checks are usually light at Bardonnex, but Swiss authorities can stop buses, cars or trains at any time, so proper ID and the right visa are required even if the crossing feels open.

Option 1: Train – The most convenient

TER Auvergne Rhône Alpes

I like convenience and tend to be a train gal. If like me you don’t like dealing with traffic or parking, then taking the train from Part Dieu directly to Geneva is usually the easiest way to reach the city center.

Typical travel time Around 1 hr 50 min – 2 hr 5 min on TER trains or TGV Lyria

Train distance Around 112 km on a straight valley line.

Exact route breakdown

Lyon Part Dieu → Genève Cornavin

Train map The route follows a low elevation corridor between Lyon and Geneva with no mountain sections.

Train stops

  • Amberieu en Bugey
  • Tenay Hauteville
  • Virieu le Grand Belley
  • Culoz
  • Seyssel Corbonod
  • Bellegarde sur Valserine
  • TGV Lyria may only stop at Bellegarde before continuing to Cornavin

Arrival inside Geneva

  • Genève Cornavin is the main station in the city
  • Short walk to Lake Geneva and the lakefront promenades
  • Easy access to trams and buses for Plainpalais, Carouge, international district and airport
  • Direct access to the Old Town and main shopping streets around Rue du Rhône and Rue de la Confédération

Rail conditions to expect Swiss and French regional trains on this corridor are known for keeping close to schedule, especially on the direct services. Bikes are allowed on many TER trains on ligne 3, with some periods requiring a reservation when it is busy.

What you should know The station sits directly in the center, so you won’t need taxis or extra transport to reach the lakefront or Old Town. Luggage space is available onboard, and the walk from the station to the main sights is flat and easy.

Best suited for: Solo travelers, couples, students, and anyone who wants a simple, stress free arrival without worrying about border traffic or parking.

Option 2: Car – The fastest & most flexible

If you like having full control over timing , and the freedom of renting a car then driving to Geneva is a great option. It’s the fastest and you stay on major highways the whole way.

Typical travel time Around 1 hr 40 min – 2 hr depending on traffic near the Swiss border.

Total Cost: €60 to €65 one way. Cost breakdown: Fuel is between €15 and €20, and the Swiss motorway vignette costs around €45 and is required to drive on Swiss highways.
*Note: the cost of renting a car is not included.

Driving distance Around 150 km using the A42 and A40 highways.

Total cost Fuel plus the Swiss motorway vignette, which costs around €45 and is required to drive on Swiss highways.

The A40 drive on the way from Lyon to Geneva
Drive on a40 from Lyon to Geneva

Exact route breakdown

Lyon → Geneva (via A42 and A40)

Segment 1: Highway drive

  • Leave Lyon on the A42
  • Continue on the A40 toward Geneva
  • Pass by Pérouges, Meximieux and Nantua
  • Approach the border near Bardonnex
  • Enter Geneva and continue toward the city center

Border crossing The Bardonnex border point is usually smooth, but traffic can build up during peak hours, especially weekday mornings and late afternoons.

Arrival inside Geneva

  • Enter the city via Route de Chancy or Route de Saint Julien
  • Quick access to Plainpalais, Carouge and the lakefront
  • Parking garages available near Cornavin, Mont Blanc, Saint Antoine and Plaine de Plainpalais

Road conditions to expect The entire route is on major highways with no mountain driving. Traffic can slow down near the border, especially during commuter hours. Weather rarely affects this corridor except during heavy winter fog around the Ain region.

What you should know You must purchase the Swiss motorway vignette to use highways in Switzerland. Parking in Geneva can be expensive, and many areas have strict time limits. If you’re staying in the city center, a hotel parking option can make things easier.

Note: The Swiss motorway vignette is a mandatory annual sticker that allows you to drive on Swiss highways. Most rental cars already have it attached, but if yours doesn’t, you can buy it directly from the rental company, at the Swiss border, or at petrol stations and post offices near the frontier.

Best suited for: If you want flexibility, have families with luggage, and anyone who prefers controlling their schedule. Also good if you plan to explore areas around Geneva like Nyon, Lausanne or Montreux.

Option 3: Bus – The cheapest

flixbus lyon

If you prefer saving money, then a FlixBus or BlaBlaCar Bus to Geneva is the most budget friendly way to reach the city.

Typical travel time Around 2 hr 10 min – 2 hr 40 min depending on traffic near the Swiss border.

Total cost €8 – €20 one way on FlixBus or BlaBlaCar Bus.

Bus distance Around 150 km following the same A42 and A40 corridor used by cars.

Best suited for: Budget travelers, students, solo travelers, and anyone who wants the cheapest way to reach Geneva without transfers.

Exact route breakdown

Lyon → Geneva (direct bus)

Segment 1: Bus

  • Depart from Lyon Perrache or Lyon Part Dieu depending on the operator
  • Travel via A42 and A40
  • Cross the border near Bardonnex
  • Arrive at Geneva Bus Station beside Cornavin

Bus stops Most direct buses run direct from Lyon to Geneva. Some services may stop at Bourg en Bresse or Bellegarde, but the cheapest FlixBus and BlaBlaCar Bus routes usually go straight to Geneva.

  • Short walk to Lake Geneva
  • Easy access to trams and buses for Plainpalais, Carouge and the international district
  • Direct access to Old Town and main shopping streets

Who this option suits best Works well for students, solo travelers, and anyone who wants the lowest cost arrival without transfers.

My Top Tips

• Cornavin is the easiest arrival It’s super easy to walk from Cornavin to the lake, Old Town and trams (no extra transport needed). This is why many people choose the train over driving.

• Avoid tight airport connections If you’re going to Geneva → Lyon Airport, TER delays happen occasionally at Cornavin, so leave one train earlier if you have a flight.

• Border checks happen more often than expected Buses and trains can be stopped randomly during commuter hours. Make sure you have a valid passport or national ID, and non EU visitors must have a valid Schengen visa.

• Buses are cheap but the border can ruin timing Delays are common at Bardonnex between 7:30-9:30 and 16:30-18:30. Outside these windows, buses usually run smoothly. buses can be delayed near Bardonnex during peak hours, so avoid early morning and late afternoon commuter windows.

• Driving is fast but parking in Geneva is difficult Street parking fills early and is expensive. The most reliable garages are Mont Blanc, Cornavin, Saint Antoine and Plaine de Plainpalais.

Which option is best

• Train Choose this when you want the simplest cross border trip with a direct arrival in Geneva’s center.

• Car Choose this when you want the fastest travel and flexibility to explore Lake Geneva or continue deeper into Switzerland.

• Bus Choose this when you want the cheapest option and don’t mind slightly longer travel times.

❤️ My choice I personally go with train (it’s the most convenient) and stress free arrival in Geneva. If you want the cheapest, go with the bus. If you’re planning onward travel around Lake Geneva, choose the car.
