When I think about Lyon in May, I think about how easy the city feels. The weather finally settles, the days get longer, and you can spend more time outside without planning around the cold. It’s also my birthday month and my fav. season: SPRING! And in France May is filled with bank holidays a.k.a jours fériés (I’d like to think it’s because of my birthday month!

Why Visit Lyon in May
May is one of the easiest months to enjoy Lyon. The weather finally settles, the cold is gone, and you can spend most of your day outside without thinking about it. I like this month because you can walk around comfortably, eat outside, and explore without dealing with heat or heavy crowds.
If you enjoy exploring on foot, this is a great time. The climbs in Vieux Lyon feel do-able(ish haha), the views are clear, and the city looks clean after spring rain. Markets start to look more colorful, restaurants open their windows, and the whole place feels lighter.
What I like most about May is how simple everything feels. You don’t need a strict plan. You can wander, stop for a drink, visit a museum, sit by the river, and it all works. It’s a comfortable month to be here, and that comfort makes the city easy to enjoy.
Major Annual Events in May
May has a few recurring events that give the city some energy without overwhelming it. These are the ones you’ll see mentioned every year:
• Nuits Sonores A major electronic music festival that spreads across different venues and outdoor spaces. Even if you are not attending, you feel the buzz around town.
• Les Nuits de Fourvière The program usually starts toward the end of May or early June. Concerts and performances take place in the Roman amphitheatre above the city. It is one of Lyon’s signature cultural moments.
• Fête de la Nature A nationwide celebration of nature with small activities and workshops. Lyon usually hosts a few family‑friendly events in parks and gardens.
• Marché de la Création This happens every Sunday along the Saône. It is not a May‑only event, but the warmer weather makes it a pleasant stop if you enjoy local art and handmade pieces.

What to Eat in Lyon in May
Fruits available in May: May is when the first real spring fruits show up in Lyon’s markets. Strawberries (fraises) are everywhere, especially gariguette, ciflorette, cléry, and darselect. Cherries (cerises) begin appearing from mid May, mostly early varieties from Auvergne Rhône Alpes. You will also see rhubarb (rhubarbe) and a mix of citrus that is still available at this time of year.
Vegetables available in May: Lyon’s markets feel noticeably fresher in May. Asparagus (asperges) is still at its best, both green and white. You will also find peas (petits pois), fava beans (fèves), artichokes (artichauts), cucumbers (concombres), courgettes, radishes (radis), fennel (fenouil), and spring greens like roquette and blette. It is also one of the last good months for spinach (épinards) before summer heat arrives.
Seafood available in May: Fishmongers in Lyon follow the national French seasonal calendar, and in May you will see more hake (merlu), sea bream (dorade), and trout (truite). Pike (brochet) is also in season for a short window. These are the species that tend to appear more often at stalls and in daily specials this month.
Cheeses available in May: Spring is the right moment for fresh goat cheese (chèvre frais), which is at its peak now. You will also find soft regional cheeses like Saint Marcellin and Saint Félicien, along with seasonal standouts such as Beaufort AOP, Banon, Crottin de Chavignol, Epoisses, and Roquefort. These are common in Lyon’s fromageries during May.

Weather in Lyon in May
May is one of the most comfortable months to be outside in Lyon. The weather settles in a lovely spring breeze. My birthday month and favorite season! Most days sit in a pleasant middle range, warm enough for a light layer but not warm enough to make you look for shade every ten minutes.
Rain still shows up, but it usually passes quickly. I always keep a small umbrella in my bag. Even when it rains, the temperature stays reasonable, so you can still explore without feeling stuck indoors.
Here is what the weather usually looks like in May:
• Average daytime temperature: 18- 20°C (64- 68°F)
• Average morning and evening temperature: 11- 13°C (52- 55°F)
Public Holidays in May

May has several public holidays, known in France as jours fériés. Many shops close, museums adjust hours, and the city gets busier in parks and along the river.
• 1 May – Fête du Travail, almost everything is closed
• 8 May – Victory in Europe Day, reduced hours for shops and museums
• Ascension Thursday – date changes each year, many people take a long weekend
• Pentecost Monday – lighter closures but still a public holiday
These days can affect restaurant bookings, transport schedules, and museum hours, so it is good to plan ahead!
